About the Executive Committee

An Executive Committee is responsible for developing the future strategy of the Section and enhancing the services it already offers to its members. Current committee members are: Julia Balfour-Lynn; Christine Berry; David Bott; Alison Downie (Chair); Nigel Haddon; John Mitchell; Paul Widdup and Simon Young.

Julia Balfour-Lynn is managing partner of Peters and Peters, a London law firm specialising in fraud and regulatory matters and civil fraud. She is responsible for business development and planning, financial management, people, risk and compliance (including legal aid specialist quality mark).

Christine Berry is managing partner of Taylor Vinters, a 30-partner commercial law firm in Cambridge. She is a second-career lawyer, having previously been director of a London publishing house. She qualified as a solicitor in 1992 and became Taylor Vinters' first full-time managing partner in 1998. She is a member of the CBI's regional council for the East of England.

David Bott is managing partner of Bott and Co, a specialist personal injury firm based in Wilmslow, Cheshire. He was admitted in 1996 and founded Bott and Co in 2001. He has overseen his firm's growth and accreditation with Lexcel and Investors in People.

Alison Downie (Chair) is a partner and Head of Employment at Bindman & Partners, specialising in employment, discrimination and contract law. Previously she was a partner, managing partner and head of civil litigation at another large London law firm. She is a member of the Employer Lawyers Association and former chair and board director of Release Ltd, the national legal and drugs advice charity.

Deborah Evans is Chief Executive of the Legal Complaints Service (formerly the Consumer Complaints Service). She was previously the practice director at Anthony Collins solicitors.

Nigel Haddon is a construction solicitor and chartered arbitrator. He is managing partner of SAS Daniels, a four-office regional firm in the North West offering a broad range of commercial and private client services, including publicly-funded family law.

John Mitchell is managing partner of Sills and Betteridge in Lincoln and specialises in family law. He is a member of the Law Society Children and Mediation Panels. He served as a deputy district judge between 1993 and 1996 and is a member of the Legal Services Area Committee and a member of the Lincoln Family Court Business Committee and Lincoln Family Court Forum.

Paul Widdup is an independent management consultant, coach and mentor. He has been a practising solicitor, and law firm partner for more than 30 years, and, until his recent retirement from Emsleys, based in Leeds, was the managing partner in a practice that has grown to eight branch offices, six estate agency offices, and more than 130 staff. He holds an MBA in legal practice management, and a postgraduate qualification in executive coaching.

Simon Young is a director of Lawyers Compliance. A solicitor, consultant, trainer and author within the legal profession, he has written broadly on management topics, especially on issues of risk and quality management, and partnership. Publications include New partner’s guide to management (Law Society Publishing); Tolley's Limited liability partnership handbook; the partnership title of the Encyclopaedia of forms and precedents; and (jointly) Tolley’s Money laundering handbook. He is the Section's representative on the Law Society Council.
